SC Revokes Sonam's Bail In Raja Raghuvanshi Murder Case, Gives 3 Weeks To Surrender
The Supreme Court on Thursday cancelled the bail granted to Sonam Raghuvanshi, the prime accused in the alleged murder of Raja during their honeymoon in Meghalaya in May 2025, and ordered to surrender within three weeks.
New Delhi: In the Raja Raghuvanshi murder case, Sonam, the prime accused in the alleged murder of her husband during their honeymoon in Meghalaya in May 2025, has received a major setback from the Supreme Court. The Top Court on Thursday cancelled her bail and ordered to surrender within three weeks.
What did the Supreme Court say?
The Supreme Court on Thursday issued this order while hearing an appeal from the Meghalaya government. The state government had filed a petition challenging the bail granted to Sonam Raghuvanshi, wife of Indore businessman Raja Raghuvanshi, who was accused of murdering him during their honeymoon.
"We are inclined to observe that continued enlargement on bail of the respondent (Sonam Raghuvanshi) at this stage might hinder the ongoing trial. In such a matter we are inclined to set-aside the bail order... The respondent has been given two weeks to surrender. In the event of trial not concluding within six months the respondent can submit an application seeking bail," the Court said.
The Top Court ordered that the trial be completed within six months. If the trial is not completed within six months, Sonam can file a fresh bail petition. The court also ordered her to surrender within three weeks.
"You (Sonam's counsel) have two options. Either we will pass an order on merits or we will ask you to surrender, let the public witnesses question you - meanwhile we will decide the matter on merits (on bail)," the bench said.

Did High Court upheld Sonam's bail?
On June 30, the Meghalaya High Court upheld the bail granted by a lower court to Sonam Raghuvanshi, the main accused in the Raja Raghuvanshi murder case, and dismissed the Meghalaya government's challenge to the bail. The High Court acknowledged flaws in the arrest process. The Meghalaya government appealed this decision to the Supreme Court.
Did court ask Sonam to surrender?
On Thursday, the Supreme Court gave Sonam's lawyer two options, whether Sonam Raghuvanshi would surrender or the court would decide on canceling her bail. In her response to the Supreme Court, accused declared herself innocent and stated that she had been falsely implicated in the case. The prosecution's entire case against her is based on circumstantial evidence. Therefore, she cannot be held guilty based on allegations alone.
What did the Meghalaya government say?
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who is appearing for the Meghalaya government, told the Supreme Court that the document was merely a typo for a legal section number. Such a minor technical error should not be the basis for granting bail. Mehta also argued that Sonam was likely to abscond if her bail was upheld.
